A Survey on Breastfeeding Practices and Its Related Factors in Pohang City

Abstract

|
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the breastfeeding practices and to identify factors related to the breastfeeding in Pohang city.
Methods : Study subjects were 449 mothers residing in Pohang city who had delivered at one of five medical institutions (one university hospital, one general hospital and three OB/GYN clinics) in Pohang city between September 15 and October 14, 1999. A telephone survey was performed by a trained nurse from November 15 to December 6,1999.
Results : Breastfeeding rate at 2 to 3 months after delivery was 15.7%, mixed feeding(both breastfeeding and formula feeding) rate was 62.7% and formula feeding rate was 21.6%. In multinomial logistic regression analysis. the significant variables affecting the breastfeeding(reference group; formula feeding) were the experience of breastfeeding(OR 8.15 compared with those without experience, 95% CI 3.33-19.90), higher educational level of mother(13 years or more) (OR 3.69 compared with those with 12 years of education or less, 95% CI 1.62-8.39), delivering at OB/GYN clinic(OR 3.15 compared with at university or general hospital, 95% CI 1.35-7.34), and vaginal delivery(OR 2.44 compared with c-section, 95% CI 1.04-5.74). The main reason for not breastfeeding at all or early stopping was ’lack of breastmilk’.
Conclusions : The breastfeeding rate in Pohang city was very low. To promote breastfeeding, district health center needs to develop an effective education program for the breastfeeding practices for both pregnant and postpartum women, especially for the high risk group such as mothers without experience of breastfeeding, mothers with low educational level, mothers delivered at university or general hospital and mothers who had c-section delivery.
